A tribute from Doug McKenzie - Photographer to the stars.
Thank you for taking the time to write this.
I have recently purchased these two wonderful pictures from Doug.
In 1948 having just left the army at the age of 22 I was in partnership with Joe Mathews, specializing in photographing celebrities. The partnership split up in late 1974, with Joe retaining all the negatives, losing them all in a fire soon after. I had retained a few prints that I had taken including the one of Lena that you have now. My partner Joe, died in Spain soon after. I have worked for myself ever since as a photographer.
The only other youngsters I can recall photographing, of equal fame to Lena are - The Jackson Five, The Nolan’s and The Osmond’s.
I photographed Lena Zavaroni at the home of Dorothy Solomon. It was a long time ago, early 70’s either in Park Lane, London or nearby. I spent a pleasant two or three hours having afternoon tea with them both, and of course took a number of photographs of Lena relaxing. I remember it as a very pleasurable assignment she was easy to talk to and very helpful. I was very surprised that one so young, could be so talented, and become so well known in such a short time. Her early death shocked us all.
