Tribute for Lena
I photographed Lena Zavoroni at the home of Dorothy Solomon her managers. It was a long time ago it was in 1974 either in Park Lane, London or nearby. I spent a pleasant two or three hours having afternoon tea with them both, and of course took a number of photographs of Lena relaxing. I remember it as a pleasurable assignment, she was, easy to talk to and very helpful. I was very surprised that one so young, could be so talented, and become so well known in such a short time. Her early death shocked us all.
In 1948 having just left the army at the age of 22, I was in partnership with Joe Mathews, specialising in photographing celebrities. The partnership split up in 1964, with Joe retaining all the negatives, losing them all in a fire soon after. I had retained a few prints that I had taken including the one of Lena you have. My partner, Joe died in Spain soon after. I have worked for myself ever since as a photographer. The only other youngsters I can recall photographing, of equal fame to Lena are,
The Jackson Five, the Nolan’s and the Osmond’s,
